Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey Calls For Officer Who Knеlt On George Floyd’s Neck To Be Arrеsted

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has called for the arrеst of the police officer who knеlt on George Floyd’s neck.

The African American man was arrеsted by Minneapolis police on Monday, May 25, for reportedly using a counterfeit $20 note in a shop. While being detained, one of the officers knеlt on his neck for around eight minutes, according to witnesses. Floyd lost consciousness and later died.

Following the tragic ordeal, the city’s mayor has pressed for Derek Chauvin – the officer who knеlt on Floyd’s neck – to be arrеsted.

All four officers involved, including Chauvin, have been fired from the force following Monday’s altercation, something the mayor deemed the ‘right call’.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, May 27, Frey spoke about arrеsting Chauvin:

Why is the man who kіlled George Floyd not in jail? If you had done it or I had done it, we would be behind bars right now, and I cannot come up with a good answer to that question.

I’m calling on the Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman to act on the evidence before him. I’m calling on him to charge the arrеsting officer in this case. We cannot turn a blind eye. It is on us as leaders to see this as it is and call it what it is.

Frey isn’t alone in calling for Chauvin’s arrеst; George’s sister Bridgett Floyd told NBC’s Today show that her family wanted all four officers to be arrеsted and charged with murder.

According to reports, Chauvin, a 19-year veteran of the police force, has been investigated for the shооtings of three people while on duty, one of which resulted in them dying.

As reported by the Star Tribune, the 44-year-old was one of six officers connected to the 2006 death of Wayne Reyes. Reyes, 42, was fatally shot after allegedly pulling a gun on the officers.

In 2008, Chauvin was investigated for his involvement in the shооting of Ira Latrell Toles during a domestic assault call. Chauvin reportedly shot Toles in the abdomen after he went for one of the officers’s guns.

Chauvin was also among the officers involved in the shооting of 23-year-old Leroy Martinez, who was injured during a police chase in 2011, according to the MailOnline.

Protesters against death of George Floyd

The tragic death of 46-year-old Floyd sparked protests in Minneapolis on Tuesday that continued into yesterday, May 27.

Tuesday’s protests ended with anti-riot police firing tear gas at protesters, while Wednesday’s began much more peacefully, according to Buzzfeed News.

Unfortunately this also ended in anti-riot police attending the scene and going on to shооt rubber bullets at the crowd. Several local stores were apparently looted in the process.

Alongside the protests, there’s been a campaign on social media with the hashtag ‘Justice for Floyd’, which has been shared by thousands of people.

The campaign focuses heavily on the fact Floyd told police he could not breathe, yet Chauvin failed to remove his knеe from resting on the man’s neck.
